FAST COMPANY URBAN WORKSHOP
NEW YORK NY
WORKSHOP
2018
In 2018 Eliza developed and ran a series of design thinking workshops for multidisciplinary participants in New York City. The goal of the workshop was to introduce participants to a design and problem solving strategy originating from the constraints that typically feel like roadblocks. By turning the problem on its head, we asked participants to imagine how urban constraints can instead become design opportunities.
Each group tackled a common urban nuisance - garbage, street parking, crowded subways, empty storefronts, and inaccessible rivers. They asked questions, analyzed the players and turned the problems upside down. What if these issues that people always complain about could become assets to the city experience instead? Instead of eliminating the constraints, an often impossible task, could we instead capitalize on them and turn them into opportunities for the public.
At the end of the workshop participants wrote their ideas on postcards to be mailed to friends and neighbors. Alternative design thinking can’t be done in a bubble. We must spread the word and continue the conversation!
