MONTGOMERY VIOLINS

After more than 35 years operating from a downtown storefront on Hillsborough St, Montgomery Violins, a respected violin maker, was looking to relocate.
To create a new home for the workshop and the decades of history, a 1900’s folk-victorian house was renovated and reconfigured to accommodate a 3-person woodshop, showroom and tryout room.
Squeezing into a dramatically reduced floor area, efficiency of instrument storage was of paramount concern. At the same time, the rich, lacquered tones of the violins pointed to an obvious solution.
To bring focus to the warm tones of the instruments, the pine floors were refinished to a close range, and all of the interior walls were painted white to mute the ornate trim work. Custom instrument racks were designed that not only store the instruments but also arrange them as an architectural installation, allowing the entry foyer, storage area, and tryout area to exist within the same space. This allowed the entirety of the second floor to be allocated for the most important function, the workshop.
While many artifacts and memorabilia found new homes during the move, a selection of peculiar instruments accumulated over the years were curated and arranged into an exhibition serving as the centerpiece of the tryout space.
For the restroom, a custom wallpaper was designed from a measured drawing of a historic violin and teselated in a configuration reminescent of victorian wallpapers.
Some might call this a “historic restoration”, but compared to some of the violins on the wall, the house is just a spring chicken.
